UPDATED: The D2: The Mighty Ducks Rollerblading Sequence, Analyzed

Above is the rollerblading sequence in the classic hockey film, D2: The Mighty Ducks. To most, this scene represents a fun way of showing the squad of lovable characters from the first film all getting back together. But for Twin Citizens, it is a baffling display of rollerblading endurance. You see, the places they go are not all that close together.

So follow me, as I follow Charlie Conway and the rest of the crew on an epic rollerblading trip around the Twin Cities metro area!

The first landmark I can recognize is Emerson School. A quick search on Google Maps gives us our starting point: right in the heart of Minneapolis, near Loring Park. A good place to start.

Unless you're planning on rollerblading to the Mall of America to pick up Averman. That is, um, not a quick trip. Here is the map, for those of you who are not familiar:

That's 9.6 miles of rollerblading. Oof. Well, maybe the rest of the crew is down in that area.

Oh good God. That's St. Anthony Falls, back up in Minneapolis. That's pretty much the same trip as last time.

Only a little farther. About 10.6 miles this time. So where are these crazy kids off to next?

Huh. That's the Merriam Street bridge to Nicollet Island. That's actually really close by. Rollerblading distance even!

A mere 0.4 mile trip! Next, the gang picks up Goldberg at his family's deli. Location unknown. Might be in Philly. However, I'll be kind and assume that it is somewhere in downtown Minneapolis. I say this because the gang is next seen...

...traveling northeast (away from downtown) on the Hennepin Avenue bridge.

Again, a perfectly believable rollerblading distance! Maybe that whole trip to the Mall of America was just an aberration.

Nope. That's Irvine Park. In St. Paul.

That's another 9.5 miles. This has got to be the best conditioned team in the country. No wonder they were selected to represent the USA in the Jr. Goodwill Games! The Ducks next go to pick up the cake-eater, Adam Banks. I assume he now lives in St. Paul, and not Edina. The sequence closes with the Ducks skating near what looks like a lake.

Now, I tried briefly to identify this lake that they are at. Unfortunately, this is Minnesota and there are about 100 lakes in the metro area to choose from, so I have no idea. Maybe my go-to phone-a-friend for all things Minnesota geography, Joe U, can help? Joe?

Even without including this final trip, we can determine Charlie Conway (and Jesse) skated over 30 miles picking up the rest of the team. 30 miles! That's more than a marathon worth of rollerblading. That's impressive. Maybe them being the top youth hockey team in the world is not so far-fetched after all.

UPDATE: Joe U comes through like a champ! The lake is Lake of the Isles. As you might guess, Lake of the Isles is nowhere near Irvine Park. It is 11.4 miles away, in fact, which brings the total trip to over 40 miles (not including going to wherever Banks lives).

  1. I like how many of these posts end with a call to Joe U for reference on something. My first guess on the lake location would be Isles because they's have to film at one of lakes in the chain and it looks oddly shaped in the picture.

Terrific use of the word Twin Citizen, btw.

  2. Ok, quick trip to Lake of the Isles via google maps street view... and that's totally it. Joe, you are amazing.

    1. You are the only person who I know for sure looks at this stupid shit, and I'm trying to get some reader participation going. So get Drew or whoever to read/comment and I'll stop bugging you*.

    2. Twin Citizen has to be the correct term, right? What's a resident of St. Paul? St. Paulite? St. Paulan? St. Pauler? I think I'd go with St. Pauler. Or just Pauler, for short. A resident of Minneapolis is obviously a Minneapolitan.

    *I won't stop bugging you.

  3. Adam Banks lives in Linden Hills (west of Lake Harriet), not by Lake of the Isles.

  4. Thanks, anonymous internet commenter! But where is this information about where Adam Banks lives coming from? It does not appear to be anywhere on the internet. Are you an acquaintance of his?

Anyway, it doesn't add up. Why would they go to St. Paul at all then?

    1. Adam Banks lives in Kenwood Neighborhood of Minneapolis, north side of Lake of the Isles (same lake as the trip wire by the canoes). It's the garage of 1607 Mt Curve Ave, Minneapolis, MN in the scene.

  8. A couple notes:
-Goldberg’s Deli is Kramarczuk’s deli in Northeast Minneapolis. It looks just like it and the signage on the front that says Goldberg’s is stylized just like Kramarczuk’s.
-The location of Adam Bank’s home is a mystery. In the original Mighty Ducks, it’s said that he lives at 450 North Hennepin which is not an actual address and makes no sense as that is a commercial area with no residences. In fact, the closest real address would be the Gay 90’s and the Brass Rail. So Adam lives in between gay bars?.... In D2 Adam does say that he is from Edina and being a cake eater, that does make sense.... The St Paul theory? No reason to think that other than the shot just before it was in st paul.
-The Ducks trip doesn’t end at Lake of the Isles. After stripping, shaming, and tying up the Hawks, the Ducks rollerblade to the Band Box Diner in Elliot Park near downtown Minneapolis.

    1. It makes sense that they end at Band Box Diner because that's right behind Charlie Conway's apartment. Many people site Adams apartments at 500 9th St but if you look at the brick between the windows, there's a few of them at Adams where in the movie there's only 1 full brick width. And when Conway first goes to it in the first movie, the address "1009" is on the wall. 1009 Park Ave is the Drexel Apartments and also has a park across the street. Band Box Diner is the other side of the triangular block.

    2. **500 9th is a mistake, I meant Adams Apartments, 500 South 10th Street is what others mistake Conway's apartment for.

    3. Snap, the alley Fulton takes a snapshot in that hits Bombay's car is the alley behind Drexel Apartments.
