Singles: You Make Me Real
If I had to guess which tracks from this album were released as singles before I looked it up, I probably would have said "Waiting for the Sun" and "Roadhouse Blues." I think "You Make Me Real" would have been my third or fourth choice. What were the good people at Elektra Records thinking? Luckily for the dimwits at Elektra, it is really hard to go wrong with this album. Pretty much every song could have been a successful single. Their dumbest move was probably only releasing one single off this album. I guess they don't like money.
I love this album. The music is amazing. "Waiting for the Sun" is quite possibly my favorite Doors song. It's a song that was meant to be listened to on vinyl, and meant to be played loud so that you can feel the power of it. I love that the two sides of the record aren't just "Side 1" and "Side 2" or "Side A" and "Side B." They are "Hard Rock Cafe*" and "Morrison Hotel," and there is a distinct difference between them, musically. Hard Rock Cafe is just that: hard rock, while the Morrison Hotel has much softer numbers like "Indian Summer" and "The Spy."
*The popular chain of restaurants is named after this side of the album. I used to think that the Hard Rock Cafe was this great, really cool restaurant. Then I ate at one and realized it's just average food that is way overpriced. But the rock memorabilia is still cool.
Rating: 12 thumbs up - An absolute classic. Arguably the best album by the Doors, who of course are rock and roll royalty. If you don't like it, fuck you.
Every good Doors album should feature a song where Jim Morrison stops singing, and just recites some borderline disturbing poetry, and Morrison Hotel does not disappoint. Here's "Peace Frog." Enjoy!
